Line of action

Meaning

The line of action is a single flowing line drawn through the main thrust of a pose to organise the whole figure. It may be a long curve, a straight sweep or an angular line, depending on the energy of the pose. For a figure leaning on one leg it can run from the head down the spine and through the supporting leg. Drawing it first, quickly and with the whole arm, keeps the later shapes working together. It is a tool for seeing the pose, not an outline to trace. See also: Gesture, Contrapposto, Mannequin and the guide "Gesture Drawing for Beginners: Capturing Movement Before Detail".
