Iliac crest

Meaning

The iliac crest is the curved upper rim of the hip bone, and you can feel it by placing your hands on your waist (OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology). Its front end is the anterior superior iliac spine, a palpable point at the front corner of the pelvis. Artists use these points to mark the upper edges of the pelvic mass, and to see how the pelvis tilts relative to the ribcage. On softer bodies they are only suggested, so infer them from the skeleton you know. See also: Pelvis, Ribcage, Contrapposto and the guide "Skeleton Landmarks Every Figure Artist Should Know".
