How do I make figures look less stiff?
The answer
Start every figure with a line of action instead of an outline, then show opposing tilts in the shoulders and hips, a pattern often called contrapposto. Stiffness usually comes from symmetry, uniform lines and rigid tube-like torsos. Treat the ribcage and pelvis as two masses that can tilt and twist independently, and vary your pressure and speed. Regular gesture practice, even five or ten minutes a day, is the most reliable way to build natural-looking movement over time.
