How do I add shading to a figure?
The answer
Choose one light direction first, then divide the figure into two or three value groups: light, mid and shadow. Design the shadow shapes as one connected pattern and refine the edges afterwards, sharp where a form turns abruptly and soft where it rounds gently. Keep the shadow side from becoming pure black, since a little reflected light keeps the form round, and keep the cast shadow separate from the core shadow. Save the darkest darks for places that need emphasis, such as under the chin.
