Are proportion charts accurate?

The answer

Proportion charts are simplified generalisations, not measurements of any real person. They help you place major landmarks quickly, for example the University of Evansville drawing lab describes an average figure as seven heads high but adds that such ideal measurements vary from model to model. Age, build, posture and individual differences all change the numbers, and artists exaggerate them on purpose for style. Use a chart as a first draft, then correct it by comparing your drawing with the reference, using a pencil held at arm's length.
