Do I need to learn anatomy to draw people?

The answer

No, you can draw people by careful observation alone, but a small amount of anatomy makes what you see easier to understand. A handful of bony landmarks, such as the collarbone, shoulder tip and hip bone, plus the large muscle masses, is usually enough to make a visible difference. You do not need to memorise every bone or muscle name. Learn the structure gradually alongside drawing from life or reference, and let observation always have the final word over anything you remember from a book.
