How do I check my proportions?
The answer
Hold a pencil at arm's length with one eye closed, with your elbow locked so the distance stays constant, and use one part, such as the head, as a unit to compare the rest of the figure. This is called sight-sizing or comparative measuring. You can also hold the pencil along a line, such as the slope of the shoulders, and transfer that angle to the paper. Check vertical alignments too, like the head over the supporting foot, and compare with the reference, not with a chart.
