Which muscles should beginners learn first?
The answer
Beginners should learn the large muscle masses that shape the silhouette first: the trapezius, deltoid, pectoral, latissimus dorsi, quadriceps, hamstrings and calf. Learn each one as a simple shape with a clear start, direction and end, and notice how it wraps around the bone beneath. Muscle visibility varies with build, age and training, so adjust the general pattern to the person you are drawing. Smaller muscles can wait until these big forms feel natural, and many are never needed at all in sketches.
