How do I draw a face that does not look flat?

The answer

Build the head as a volume first: a sphere with a curved centre line and brow line, then place the features on that surface. Flatten the sides slightly, and let the lines curve around it like a globe's longitude and latitude. Place the features on that curved surface rather than on a flat oval, and rotate the construction in steps to understand three-quarter and profile views. Add light and shadow once the planes of forehead, cheeks, nose and chin are clear. A faint centre line that curves with the turn is the biggest single help.
